The Beginner's Guide to Choosing Lashes for your Eye Shape

Hey, Icona Lash friends! My name is Lindsey Elizabeth (Instagram is Linz.e) and I am so excited to announce that I am the new Icona Lashes Beauty Stylist! A lot of things are shifting for the Icona Lashes company, and I’m grateful to be part of the process.

I know I’m not the only one that sees gorgeous lashes on a celebrity like Rihanna or Kim K. and instantly thinks “Oh my gosh, I would love to rock lashes like those, but I don’t know how.”

Personally, using only mascara doesn’t do it for me. Even after curling with an Icona Lashes eyelash curler, my lashes sometimes still stick straight after a few hours. If I truly want fluttery, glam lashes, falsies are the way to go.

Some may suggest lash extensions (which I’ve tried a few times) but apart from being extremely expensive, they also damage your natural lashes. Meaning when they come out, they take your lashes with you, leaving you to wait for them to grow back. Ouch.

When suggesting falsies to those who suffer from the problems I’ve listed, most beginners admit that they wouldn’t even know how to go about choosing lashes for themselves. The first step in selecting the perfect lashes for you requires you to determine your eye shape.

How to Determine your Eye Shape

If you’re new to the makeup world, chances are, you don’t know what your eye shape is. Maybe you have an idea, such as you have bigger or smaller eyes, or you’re a certain ethnicity that has a specific eye type. Regardless, figuring out your eye shape is extremely helpful not only to choose the correct false lashes but also to applying makeup overall. Your eye shape can determine what type of eyeshadow, lashes, and eyeliner would complement your face in the best way possible.

So, how can you figure out your eye shape? Icona Lashes has created a helpful graphic demonstrating what they may look like. If that’s not clear enough, I have pulled some pictures of people with different eye shapes for your reference.

Along with eye shape graphics and examples, Icona Lashes that would work well with different eye shapes are also provided. I've made it simple for beginners to choose a lash that fits them by suggesting both a natural lash and a dramatic one.

Different Eye Shapes

  • Dramatic lashes will work best for deep-set eyes because of the prominent brow bone.
  • For a more natural look: Make Him Miss Me
  • For more drama: I See You Boo

  • Since this eye shape is already large, avoid heavy lashes. Wispy lashes with a cat-eye effect won't overwhelm your eyes and instead, will give you a wide-awake look.
  • For a more natural look: Happily Ever After
  • For more drama: Make Him Miss Me

  • Most lashes will work with this eye shape, but since it has a natural cat-eye, using lashes that are longer on the ends will compliment it best.
  • For a more natural look: Head Over HeeIs
  • For more drama: I See You Boo

  • To best complement this eye shape, it's best to wear lashes that are longer in the middle. This way, the natural shape is maintained as you create more depth.
  • For a more natural look: Love Story, our best-seller, which is longest in the middle and shorter on both ends.
  • For more drama: About Last Night

  • Lighter lashes should be used with this eye shape, so they won't weigh down the eyes. Wispy and crisscrossed lashes are also useful, as they can create more dimension without being too heavy.
  • For a more natural look: Head Over Heels
  • For more drama: Make Him Miss Me

  • To lift the ends of this eye shape, you should try to wear a more dramatic lash. Sometimes close-set eyes may be perceived as smaller. For this reason, the best lashes for small eyes will enlarge and lift the outer corners of your eyes up.
  • For a more natural look: Fairy Tale
  • For more drama: I See You Boo

  • A very natural and light lash style would be best for this eye shape. A lash that is longer in the center would also give the illusion of a more open eye, a look only created by falsies.
  • For a more natural look: Fairy Tale, our lightest and most natural lash
  • For more drama: Love Story

  • Because this eye shape is already very attractive on its own, a simple pair of lashes will bring the right amount of flair to any look.
  • For a more natural look: Love Story
  • For more drama: Make Him Miss Me

Now that you have a better idea of what your eye shape is, the next step is to purchase some Icona Lashes that will compliment your unique shape best. When starting out with false lashes, it's all about trial and error.
